How to Reset Your Goals When You’re Burned Out
I’ll be honest: I’m tired.
There are seasons when I find myself exhausted and frustrated because I’m not where I wanted to be by now. Not long ago, I faced health issues that challenged me at every level. So I did what I always do. I pushed myself hard, too hard. Then I paid the price in fatigue and frustration.
I had moments of beating myself up, wondering why I wasn’t further ahead. But I’m learning that it wasn’t because I’m lazy or unproductive. Life threw me some curveballs. So instead of dwelling on what didn’t go as planned, I chose a different approach. I hit pause, took an honest look at where I was, and decided to reset my goals.
If you’re feeling behind, tired, or discouraged, you’re not alone. Here’s how you can reset, refuel, and reignite your goals, whatever time of year it is.
1. Pause for an Honest Check-In
First, take a breath and look back. Ask yourself:
- What goals did I set?
- What progress have I made so far?
- What has fallen off track, and why?
Getting clear on where you started, celebrating how far you’ve come, and honestly naming what got you off track is where the reset begins.
2. Understand Why Goals Stall
If you’re off track, there’s probably a reason, and it’s rarely because you’re “lazy.” Common culprits include:
- Fatigue and burnout
- Life changes or unexpected challenges
- Goals that were too ambitious or too vague
- Lack of time or resources
Knowing why things stalled helps you see your goals through a new lens and gives you what you need to plan your next steps.
3. Reset Your Goals Without Giving Up
It’s perfectly okay to adjust your goals. Give yourself permission to:
- Refine them. Are they still meaningful? Do they need to be smaller or more specific?
- Drop what no longer fits. Letting go is wisdom, not failure.
- Set new priorities. Maybe something new matters more now.
Resetting isn’t giving up. It’s being strategic.
4. Refuel Your Energy After Burnout
Sometimes you don’t have a motivation problem. You have an energy problem. Ask yourself:
- Am I exhausted or burned out?
- Have I taken real breaks lately?
- What is draining me most right now?
A few ways to refuel:
- Take a mental health day
- Plan a short getaway
- Get outside for fresh air and movement
- Sleep more (really!)
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Rest is productive.
5. Reignite Your Momentum
Once you’ve reset and refueled, it’s time to get moving again:
- Reconnect with your “why.” Remind yourself why this goal matters.
- Start small. Break big goals into tiny, doable steps.
- Celebrate progress. Reward yourself for milestones, no matter how small.
- Find accountability. A friend, coach, or colleague can help keep you on track.
For Leaders: When Your Whole Team Is Running on Empty
Burnout rarely hits just one person. When a team is worn out, goals slip, communication gets tense, and people stop bringing their best ideas. The good news is that the skills in this post, honest self-awareness and managing your own energy and reactions, are the heart of emotional intelligence, and they can be learned.
It’s Never Too Late to Start Again
It’s never too late to reset your goals, refuel your energy, and reignite your passion. Life may throw challenges your way, but that doesn’t decide how your story ends. Take a moment to reflect, adjust your plans if you need to, and step forward with renewed purpose. The best might still be ahead, and you have the power to make it happen.
