The Power of Self-Assessment

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is the gift of self-assessment.  Self-assessment is the ability to examine yourself and developing a straight forward and honest understanding of what makes you tick, in other words, to know who you really are.   Through self-assessment, you are able to peel back the layers and become more aware of your personality style, find out what are your weaknesses and strengths, better understand your emotional triggers and understand your leadership.

People who are high in self-awareness are remarkably clear in their understanding of what they do well, what motivates and satisfies them and which people and situations push their buttons.

Self-assessment is a critical factor in increasing your effectiveness as a leader.  Being aware of your personal qualities and leadership skills can improve the way you lead organizations and deal with others. Self-awareness is a foundational skill! When you have it, your satisfaction with life and work sky-rockets.  According to Travis Bradberry, author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0, “self-awareness is so important for job performance that 83% of people in high self-awareness are top performers.”

Being aware of one’s self is the ability to accurately perceive one’s skills and knowledge, value and responsibilities. It is being confident in what you have to offer, whether it is personally or professionally.

Self-awareness is not only important for one’s self-esteem, but it is also the key first step of full acceptance or change. Before you understand the “why” behind the reason that you think the way you do, or “why” you act the way you do, you cannot fully appreciate yourself or see the importance of making changes toward improvement.

On the other hand, lack of self-awareness can cause you to doubt your worth or overestimate your true leadership effectiveness. Both of these can cause the people you lead to begin to question your competence, which can ultimately lead to a lack of leadership effectiveness.

If you have not taken a personality assessment such as Myers-Briggs Personality Test (MBPT) or DiSC or have never completed an Emotional Intelligence assessment, I highly recommend you do so soon!  The information you learn about yourself will be eye opening and will begin to answer questions you have long pondered.
